BELIEVERS BIBLE STUDY
The Believers Bible Study (BBS) was developed as a result of a Bible study that started over twenty years ago in a small town in Texas. At the time it began, I had not given much thought to formalizing the individual lessons into a comprehensive series of studies. But as is said “God had another idea!”
A friend and I knew some teenagers and their dads who wanted to know more about the Bible, so the friend and I started an informal study during the summer months because we all had a common interest in knowing more about God’s Word. That first year we met only in the summer, and when the teenagers returned in the fall to their weekly church youth group for study and prayer, my friend and I were right there to lead the group.
Eventually, however, the study refocused and became a time when the adults got together to enjoy fellowship while learning what the Bible could and should mean to each of us. As time went by, the study adopted the formal name of Believers Bible Study. The BBS has continued to meet weekly since. For most of the years the group has been together, the meetings were in person in a home, but more recently, with my relocation to Oregon and most of the members living in Texas, the study has stayed alive and vibrant, continuing to flourish due to modern-day technology.
In the early days, BBS did some studies based on books by Christian authors; however, for the past many years, the study has used one text—the Bible. Although we still use commentaries and other reference sources to help with answers to questions, the singular focus is on God’s Word. After all, it is a BIBLE study!
I have written the lessons the entire time the study has been in existence, choosing to do that for several reasons. First, by writing the lessons rather than depending on what someone else has written, I force myself to learn what the verses are saying to me. Second, I love to write, and I have written extensively for this study, for other studies, and for my professional career in human resources. Third, and most importantly, I want to create studies that will help others get as excited about the Bible as I am! So, I am thrilled for the publication of this first study in the BELIEVERS BIBLE STUDY SERIES, The Miracles of Jesus. It is the intention that more studies will follow, such as The Parables of Jesus, Daniel, Hebrews, Men of the Old Testament, The Gospels, The Letters of Paul, and the epistles. Stay tuned!
